Flat fan nozzles create a sharply defined fan spray for concentrated impact and cleaning power. They are the most commonly used family of spray nozzles. Within this group, there are a wide variety of styles, capacities, spray angles, and distributions to precisely create the desired effect. General applications include parts cleaning, product cooling, conveyor lubricating, item coating, and surface treatment.
There are two basic types of flat fan nozzles:
Axial flow: This means that the fluid enters and exits the nozzle on the same axis. This nozzle design uses an elliptical orifice to create controlled turbulence which breaks apart the liquid. Spray angles vary from 15° to 110° and are quite consistent through a wide range of inlet pressures. Their parabolic liquid distributions make them ideal for use on a spray header where the sprays are offset and overlapped to create an overall even distribution of fluid.
Deflector flow: These designs have a solid stream orifice that sprays against a deflecting surface, sometimes referred to as a “tongue.” This type of orifice minimizes clog potential. While one style channels the fluid into a high impact, narrow angle spray, another style produces an exceptionally wide spray angle up to 140º for greater coverage.
Flat fans can also be separated based upon their type of liquid distribution:
Parabolic distribution: A flat fan creating a parabolic distribution of spray means that there is a larger distribution of droplets in the middle of the spray than on either edge. This is due to the fact that the orifice is elliptical in shape to help create the fan pattern. That makes these types of nozzles most appropriate for installation on headers where they can be overlapped with similar flat fans to create an overall even distribution of spray.
Even distribution: Certain flat fan nozzles, mainly deflector types, create an even distribution of spray across the coverage area, especially appropriate when only one nozzle is needed for the application.
Optional flat fan varieties such as nozzles with dovetail guides or pipe clamps considerably facilitate assembling and aligning of the nozzles.
