Simulation and optimization of processes

With special nozzles made from an array of different materials, Lechler offers a complete nozzle program for all spray applications in steel production. The range is wide, including casting, roll cooling, descaling and strip processing. The most important criteria is achieving optimum results by using the least amount of energy and spray media, which is a significant reduction in the overall CO2 balance of a steel mill. Due to our in-depth understanding of the process and software simulation programs, we are able to support steel mill operators directly in optimizing the quality of their steel.  Learn more.

Common Applications

Secondary Cooling: Lechler spray nozzles are designed for secondary cooling in continuous casting processes where strands of molten metal, such as steel, go through semi-solidification. With the semi-solid steel placed into the mold and moved along rollers, workers use the spray nozzles to cool the strand's surface. This process improves the quality and grade of the metal while providing an efficient method in cooling the molten metal.

Metal Descaling: When metal billets, plates, strips, and other pieces of metal become re-heated to undergo other finishing processes, such as welding, annealing, hardening, or hot forming, the metal needs to go through descaling. Descaling is when unwanted oxide films, called scale, forms on the surface of the metal. Spray nozzles remove this oxide film by providing a large coverage area to hit the entire metal surface. Lechler spray nozzles can help conserve water while achieving a high impact rate to blast off the scale.

Roll Cooling: Rolling mills use hot rolling and cold rolling to reduce the metal's thickness, reduce defects, and enhance its strength when forming the metal into structural beams, angle stock, and other products. Spray technology for the steel industry is designed to cool the rollers. This heat extraction ensures that rollers do not have hot spots that can impact this metalworking process.

Pickling: Similar to descaling, pickling is a method to remove impurities, scale, or rust from metal during hot working and cold working processes. These oxide layers must be removed to ensure a better working surface when forming the metal into different products that will be later used in a variety of industries.
